Repairing Religious Relations

Failure to evolve and to adopt an understanding of the Bible freed from the pre-modern worldview puts Christians on the wrong side of history.

One congregation in Santa Monica stands out against the dominance of the religious right in the public square.

At the UU Community Church of Santa Monica, they are hosting a  Divas and Drag concert  to lip sync sing arias from Donizetti to tunes by Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, including play bingo in celebration for Pride Month fundraising this year

For many religious folks, tolerating drag is seeing as a symbol of accepting LGBT, especially when it comes to a non-traditional setting like the church sanctuary, where Sunday sermons are held.

The House of Representatives on Friday passed the Equality Act in a historic milestone for the nation’s most comprehensive bill to protect LGBT rights.

The 236–173 vote led by Democrats with sends the measure to the Senate while leading Republicans to predict it will cause catastrophic gender-bending and gut religious exercise. Eight House Republicans voted for the bill… can you guess who?

Hardline conservative commentators claimed the bill will “unleash federal persecution of Christians,” lead to the nation’s downfall and make the lord “vomit you out.”

Known as H.R. 5, the Equality Act would expand the Civil Rights Act of 1964 along with a handful of other laws that collectively ban discrimination in housing, finances, employment, schools, and public places on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation.

The left is rightly committed to a separation of church and state, but we need to not be afraid to invoke arguments that are convincing on why Christian faith is going to point you in a progressive direction.

Truth is, the religious-right says so much about what Christ said so little about, and so little about what he said so much about.
